Double Rainbow

Storm light is both dramatic and subtle. It's very mercurial to capture. I snapped this picture of a double rainbow after a brief summer shower and until now was a bit intimidated to try and paint it. It was challenging. Rainbows are bright, but soft. The clouds are moving quickly and the shadows change just as fast. You can feel the heat coming back after the cool rain.

Green Isolation

I had been looking for some new material to paint and came across some pictures of old barns and farm buildings that I had taken years ago. It's funny how something just suddenly appeals to the artist in me and  interests me enough to do a series. Back when this was taken I wasn't at all intrigued. When I looked at it today there were all kinds of wonderful details and colors that pulled me right in. This barn is on a rolling hill in North Carolina. It sits all alone in green isolation.

Abandoned to the Goldenrod

The farm is abandoned and sits in the middle of nowhere. The surrounding fields are full of yellow goldenrod. It seems a sad, but pretty place.

Cranberry Bog

Cranberries are harvested every year, mid-September to November throughout the northeast and Cape Cod. The bogs turn a gorgeous red and then the fields are flooded to allow the berries to float to the surface for harvest. This was a crisp Fall day last year and the blue, red and green took my breath away.

Catch and Release

This is a common sight for my husband and me at the weekends. We spend a lot of time fishing and puttering around the marshes so I can take pictures for paintings. The blue fish and bass are returning to Cape Cod after wintering in deeper water. We do a lot of "Catch and Release".

Caught this marsh as a storm was moving through. There was a pretty purple tint on everything as the darkest clouds began to move inland.

A Good Place to Cast

My husband is an avid fisherman. I love to fish too, but for him it's a passion. Many are the summer nights I wake in the middle of the night and find he has abandoned me for that call of the bluefish. There are lots of salt marshes here near the marina and we putter along the edge looking for signs of the baitfish that have risen to the surface to escape being eaten by the bigger guys. My husband can accurately cast a lure to within a few inches of this grass where the bass and blues like to sit. I, however, usually end up with a lure lost in the grass or having to cut my line.  He would say this was "A good place to cast."

Whitewater, Yellow River, Georgia

Whitewater on the Yellow River

When I lived in Atlanta I used to walk my dog along this river daily. One Fall day I was struck by how the beautiful color of the leaves rushing by underwater looked like watercolor paint let loose in the current. I really tried to capture the speed and the movement with this painting. I was also interested in the colors of the rocks under the water.

In Living Color

I have been a bit sporadic of late with my blog posts. My daughter was diagnosed in late February with skin Melanoma stage 3. For the last few months I have been in Atlanta to be with her for 2 different surgeries to first remove the cancer on her skin and then determine how far it had spread. It was in one lymph node which was removed and as of today she has no detectable cancer. So thank you to everyone out there who sent her prayers and good wishes. We deeply appreciate it. So my painting has been a bit sketchy as well. Here is a new piece to celebrate life and all the color therein. It's good to be back!
